  • Easter term heads-up

(Copied from announcement sent on 14/04/2024)

Hi all, hope everyone working hard prepping for exams is doing well and wish you all the best for whatever is coming up. Here are some quick updates on what’s coming up for CUAMS in Easter term:

    Provisionally planned Easter events

    1. Spontaneous pub meets and picnics etc. (Organised here on Discord)
    2. WED 01-MAYThe Apothecary Diaries EP 13-18
    3. WED 08-MAYThe Apothecary Diaries EP 19-24
    4. WED 15-MAYAnthem of the Heart (Kokoro ga Sakebitagatterunda)
    5. SAT 08-JUNKaraoke (Date time TBC)
    6. Annual Garden Party (sometime in June after Exams depending on weather)

These are planned as an attempt by the committee to best fit the preferences given the room and time constraints, so if you have any suggestions or thoughts feel free to drop a message/have a quick discussion with others, whether it is about the choice of shows to be screened or otherwise. We have revived the #schedule-discussion channel to make this easier.

    Spontaneous meetings

We would like to encourage flexible spontaneous meetings since there are no annoying room booking hurdles. e.g. for smaller pub meets it should be fine to agree on a time and location and show up. And as the weather is getting better it’d also be nice to just grab some snack or drinks and have a chat with your fellow anime enjoyers in the open air touch grass. There is an #events channel for posts or just #general can be used for quick proposals, perhaps improvements could be made to the channels but we will see how it goes for now.

    Screenings

All 3 meetings are booked at the Castlereagh Room, Fisher Building, St John’s College 19:00-23:00 as usual, and only 3 since Exams are ramping up after Week 4. Given the limited number of meetings we only have enough time to finish at most one TV series (of 12 eps) if we decide to do so. The provisional choice is set on 2 meetings to finish The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) based on comments from the frequent members who turned up to the screenings last term, and the last meeting for a movie of choice. Although we do realise for people who weren’t able to come last term or have already watched the show but are still interested in weekly meetings, this schedule could be quite constraining. Thus if you have any thoughts we’d love to hear it.

    Karaoke

Booking with the SU TBC, but if all goes well it will be 15:00-19:00 at the SU Lounge, University Centre, Mill lane (and probably followed by pub meet). Details coming closer to the date.

    Garden Party

Usually on Jesus Green, all are welcome to join, but we do take a small charge to cover the cost of the BBQ if you choose to opt in for the food.

    Get Hyped,
    Haoran

  • Lent 2024 Term Card

Hi there, here’s a quick update with our new term card with information on our future events.

A reminder that you can use the CUAMS calendar to view details on planned events (much earlier than announcements usually), and also subscribe to it on your own calendar apps (e.g. iOS, Android) for convenience, via the links on the Schedule page

∗ Bear in mind that your apps might not update them with short enough intervals so do keep an eye on Discord/Emails for any (unlikely) last minute changes of times/venues etc.

  • New Committee, and a Pub Meet Friday!

Hello everyone, this is George, your new CUAMS Webmaster!

At our AGM, we decided upon a new committee: we gave Jacob a warm welcome as our new president, and I am confident CUAMS will continue to thrive under his watchful eye.

The committee is generally the same as last time, although our previous president Ethan has stepped down, and I have replaced Bernard as Webmaster – he is now secretary.

For reference our current committee is:

    President: Jacob

    Secretary: Bernard

    Treasurer: Ayshini

    Food Lord: Piers

    Webmaster: George

    External Officer: Elliot

    Social Secretaries: Peter and Haoran

In other news, we have an exciting event planned at the end of this week: one of our world-famous pub meets! This Friday (24/02) at the Castle Inn pub (Google Maps link attached), starting at 7pm.

We’re going to be staying for a few hours, so don’t feel like you have to show up dead on time, and by the same token there is no issue with showing up to say hi then dropping out! The kitchen will be open until 9pm, so there is a lot of opportunity to order food).

We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

On a more personal note, I’m thankful for the committee for giving me this opportunity. This is my first time running a blog or anything like that, so I am excited to give this a try! I have some archival projects planned over the coming months which I hope people will find some value in.

    CUAMS Webmaster,

    George!

  • Upcoming Freshers’ Squash

Hello everyone! Freshers’ Squash is a yearly event at CUAMS that exists for new joiners and existing members to meet and talk to fellow anime and manga fans and make friends in a relaxed atmosphere. Society members are free to join any of our other events regardless of whether they attend the Freshers’ Squash. Fresher’s Squash will be ran at 19:30 on Sunday 9th October in Keynes’ Hall at King’s College, however entry will be possible from 18:00. A CUAMS committee member will be available at the King’s College Porters’ Lodge with a CUAMS sign to let you in. If you cannot find your way or arrive late, please ping @committee in the Discord server for assistance.

The schedule will consist of a screening of 5 centimeters per second at 18:15, people may either choose to join the screening or remain in the outer room if they wish to chat. This will be followed by a short introduction to the general operation of the society and the current committee members at approximately 19:30. During the event, we will be hosting a team-based anime pub quiz and drawing games to help people to get to know each other.

For those willing to pay the optional CUAMS membership fee (no payment is required to attend CUAMS meetings), there will also be a raffle for an opportunity to win a range of prizes, including anime Blu-rays and DVDs provided by distributors we are working with. Membership will be further explained within the introduction talk.

  • Easter Term Meeting Changes

Welcome back everyone, we hope everyone had a good Easter break.

    • Karaoke
    • Anime movie screening of Night is Young, Walk on Girl

The details for these events can be found either on the schedule or on the Easter term card.

  • Pub Social Tomorrow

  • CUAMS & SAMSOC collaboration event

We are excited to announce a collaboration between CUAMS and SAMSOC (Surrey Anime and Manga Society) this coming Friday, that is the 2nd of April 2021 at 7pm BST. Although the event cannot occur in person, through the magic of Discord, we are now unconstrained by geography!

The focus of the evening will be an anime quiz which will test all manner of anime trivia. It has been designed so that there is a mix of easier and more challenging questions so everyone will be able to have fun. As well as socialising, after the quiz we will likely continue with games both familiar and new.

On Thursday evening, the link to the SAMSOC Discord server will be posted on the CUAMS Discord server, so we can get familiar before the event.

We hope to see you all Friday!

  • 2021 AGM Results

As you will be aware, the Annual General Meeting for the society took place on Friday evening, where the new committee was elected. The AGM ran smoothly and concluded with no issues. Without further ado, the new CUAMS Committee Members for 2020/2021, are:

We would like to extend a huge thanks to the previous 2019-2020 CUAMS Committee. In particular the fantastic job they did seeing the society through a challenging year, and innovating the society’s activities where necessary. The Discord server is more active than ever, with users old and new participating in games nights and discussions on all things anime and manga related. Come and say hi if you haven’t already!

We look forward to seeing you all in society events over the coming year.

  • 2021 AGM Tomorrow

This is just a reminder that our Annual General Meeting will be held on the 26th of February at 7pm, on our Discord server. This is the meeting where we vote for the people who will staff the CUAMS Committee for the following year.

The deadline to express interest in running for a committee position is noon of the day of the AGM so please send your presentation/materials to the secretary (ak2147@cam.ac.uk) by then if you plan on running.

We hope to see you all there!

Note: In case anyone is unaware, for Lent term CUAMS is not running normal anime meetings but is instead meeting every Friday at 7pm for online games, and generally hanging out and chatting. This is of course happening on the Discord .

  • Michaelmas Term 2020 Begins

A big thank you and welcome to everyone who attended the Freshers’ Squash! The committee has never had to coordinate an online meeting like that before, but it worked out well and it was great to see everone chatting together on the server.

Regular anime and manga meetings are now beginning, with the first Tuesday anime meeting tomorrow (the 20th of October), and the first manga book club on Sunday (the 25th of October). Details about the shows are on the Meetings page. and the schedule of when we are watching/reading specific episodes or chapters is on the Schedule page.

Tomorrow we will be watching the first two episodes of: Given, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken and Houseki no Kuni. As with the Freshers’ Squash, there are two ways to join in, both on Discord. You can watch these episodes in advance and join us later to discuss the shows and to chat in general, or you can start watching at the same time as others at 7pm (when an in-person meeting would have started). For those watching in the second way, we will likely take breaks between the different shows, so don’t worry too much about falling out of sync.

For the first manga book club this Sunday, we will be covering The Gods Lie (Kamisama ga Uso wo Tsuku) by Kaori Ozaki. We will be discussing the full manga at the meeting (which will be on Discord like the anime meetings) so please read it by then if you’d like to take part. The later titles that the manga book club reads will be decided by community vote, so think before the first meeting if there is anything you want to suggest.

  • Freshers’ Squash 2020

This is a reminder that our (virtual) Freshers’ Squash is happening tomorrow (Tuesday 13th October) from 7pm on our Discord server where we will be watching Wolf Children by Mamoru Osoda. We will also be playing some games together on the Discord beforehand from 5pm for people to meet and get to know each other. This may include Among Us, Scribbl.io, Jackbox Party, and other free games that members find online.

If you would prefer not to watch the film together on Discord but still want to be involved, you are encouraged to watch the film in your own time, and to keep an eye on the Discord so you can join us for games and the post film discussion.

We’d like to extend a warm welcome to all the freshers and new members who have joined us over these past few weeks. If you haven’t signed up for the mailing list, please do using this form so that you can be kept up to date with society news. Also know that in our Discord server you can assign yourself roles in the #roles channel, by reacting to the respective message. This will keep you updated when we hold relevant events.

Unlike previous years, membership is free for this Michaelmas term as we have no running costs with online meetings, as opposed to in person ones. Weekly online meetings will begin from next Tuesday the 20th, and details of the shows we will be watching can be found on the Meetings page.

  • Schedule Announcement Michaelmas 2020

In continuing caution regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, the committee has decided to carry out all CUAMS activities online for the duration of the Michaelmas term. This will happen primarily through the society Discord. The Tuesday main meetings will happen at the usual time, and will involve discussing the specified episodes of the anime, which you are asked to watch beforehand. Instead of a typical sunday meeting there are plans to instead have a manga book club, with more details to come closer to term.

At the main meetings we will be discussing the following shows: Given, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!) and Land of the Lustrous (Houseki no Kuni). More details on the shows can be found on the Meetings page.

There are also plans to hold a Virtual Fresher’s Squash on the 13th of October, where we will watch Wolf Children. Dates and times will be available on the Schedule page, and again more information will arrive closer to term.

As of yet the plans for Lent and Easter are undecided, and will be dependant on the developing guidance from the government and the university in regards to gatherings and social distancing.

We hope you’re as excited as we are to watch these shows and talk about them together! Please fell free to hop onto our Discord and take a look at the #schedule_discussion channel to discuss the planned shows. Bonus: The the Committee page page now has our discord usernames, why not stop by and say hi?

  • Virtual Garden Party

CUAMS will be holding a virtual version of our annual garden party this year. In lieu of Jesus Green, we will be celebrating on our Discord voice channel! For those not yet in the CUAMS Discord, you can join with the official CUAMS discord server link here.

This will be happening next Saturday, the 4th of July and is planned to last from 17:00 to 21:00. Please join us for chatting, Jackbox games, an Anime Music Quiz, and more!

There may or may not also be an impromptu date-related celebration instigated by a certain CUAMS member from a faraway land.

We look forward to seeing you there!

  • Easter Term Meeting Cancellations

As you are probably aware, we will be unable to meet for Easter term as the university will remain closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, this means that we will not be able to finish the shows that were scheduled for the Easter term in official CUAMS meetings.

All of the currently scheduled shows, with the exception of Spice & Wolf, are available on Crunchyroll in the UK and we highly recommend watching them during the long period of social distancing/lockdown that lies ahead of us.

If you wish to discuss the shows or keep in touch with other members of the society in general during these times, feel free to join the official CUAMS discord server linked here.

On behalf of the committee, we wish you all the best of health.

  • Bonus Meeting with ARU Anime Society

A bonus meeting has been booked for the last Thursday of term, the 5th of March. It is to be a joint meeting with the Anglia Ruskin Anime Society, and some time will be spent getting to know their members, and maybe playing some cards with them.

It will be held in the Angevin Room in Queen’s, at 7:30pm. We will be watching the 2015 film, The Anthem of the Heart.

We look forward to seeing you there!

  • Manga Workshop at the UL & Schedule Update

Schedule Update: Kekkai Sensen episode 11 was brought forward to today’s meeting, so next week (23rd February) we will be watching just episode 12, which is double length.

We have been contacted by the University Library about a Manga Workshop they want to run:

  • Freshers’ Squash 2019/20

Our first official meeting of the year, the Freshers’ Squash, will be held on Saturday 19th October, 7-10pm, Bowett Room, Queens’ College (directions here).

The line-up will include four short OVAs: the Daicon III and IV opening animations, produced by staff who would later form Gainax; Dareka no Manazashi; a short film by Makoto Shinkai; and Shelter, a Porter Robinson music video animated by A-1 Pictures). This will be followed by our main feature for the night, Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, the directorial debut of Mari Okada (previously known for shows such as Anohana and Nagi no Asakura), animated by P.A. Works. Thank you to AllTheAnime for allowing us to screen this visually-stunning and emotionally-poignant film.

The Freshers’ Squash, like all of our regular meetings, is absolutely free (and there will be snacks)! However, society membership will be up for purchase at the low, low price of £10 for the year (or £4 per term). We don’t operate for profit, so all membership fees go straight back into the society i.e. towards purchasing the variety of supermarket-quality snacks we make available to members at each meeting. Members will also be entered into our annual Fresher’s Squash raffle, drawn at the end of the night. Prizes include Blu-Rays and other goodies provided to us by our generous industry sponsors.

Get Hyped for a great year,
    CUAMS Committee

  • Easter 2019

CUAMS: what better way to break up the monotony of Easter Term exam revision?

For our start-of-term bonus meeting on Tuesday 23rd April, we’ll be screening Masaaki Yuasa’s alcohol-fueled Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome (The Night is Short, Walk on Girl), from 9pm to 11pm, in Room DD47, Queens’ College.

Sunday Meetings: Gamers! and Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight, starting Sun, 28 Apr 2019.

Main Meetings: Kyousougiga and Girls’ Last Tour, starting Tue, 30 Apr 2019.

Check out the Schedule page for full details, including venues and episode counts.

  • New Committee and Constitution Updates

Thank you to everyone that attended our AGM last week (Tue 12 Feb), where the 2018/2019 CUAMS Committee was elected.
Congratulations to our new and returning committee members, and thank you to departing members for their contribution to the society.
Amendments were also passed to bring the dated CUAMS Constitution up to modern, 3D computer-animated standards.

The members of the 2018/2019 CUAMS Committee are:

    • President: Will Barnes
    • Secretary: Roger Ren
    • Treasurer: Guoxuan Xia
    • Webmaster: Ben Bai
    • Catering Officer (Food Lord): Oscar Brown
    • External Officer: Adam Berman
    • Social Secretary: Emma Chang Liu
  • Cancelled Meeting

It is with great regret that we have to cancel our regular meetings this Sunday
20th and Tuesday 22nd due to unexpected licensing complications.

This is definitely not a desirable position to be in and we are as
disappointed as many of you must be. We hope that we will be able to resolve
these issues but it is possible that they could lead to the cancellation of
future meetings as well. We will keep you informed of any further developments
as they happen and will hope to schedule some extra social events in missing
meeting spots and otherwise in the meantime.

  • New Term and Bonus Meeting

I hope you’ve all had a good break over the Christmas holidays but the new term
is right around the corner and so we can now announce our schedule for Lent
term. We’re watching all new shows so if you’re new to CUAMS or didn’t get to
come to meetings last term, this is the perfect time to start.

Tuesday meetings will be starting on the 22nd January with Spice and Wolf,
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Kids on the Slope. Sunday meetings will be
starting on the 20th with Oregairu, Ga-Rei-Zero and SHIROBAKO. The meetings are
all at the same time as last term and most are again in the Bowett Room in
Queens’ College. However, there will be some room changes in the second half of
term that you can see the full details of on our schedule page
along with which episodes we will be watching each week so you can catch up if
    you miss a meeting.

We’ll also be starting off the term with a bonus meeting on Tuesday 15th
January 7-10pm in DD47 in Queens’ College (the seminar room we had some
meetings in last term). We’ll be watching the Ancient Magus’ Bride OVAs (which
are standalone to the main series) and Doukyuusei. It’s a great opportunity to
come along to a meeting to try out CUAMS if you’d like a taster before the
    main term starts.

Finally, the Discord server is hosting a small anime
of the year contest for fun where CUAMS members can vote for their favourite
shows of last year. It’s still accepting nominations until 9pm tonight when the
voting will begin. If you’d like to join in, you can view the contest
    here and, if
you’re not in it already, you should join the Discord server to discuss the
    results.

  • Freshers’ Fair and Squash

I hope you’re all settling back into university life, are excited to be
arriving back in Cambridge for another year soon or are preparing to come up to
Cambridge for the first time. With October around the corner, we’re happy to
be able to give you more information about our freshers’ events and the
    schedule for Michaelmas term.

We’ll be attending the Freshers’ Fair on Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd October
between 10-4pm. We’ll be in the Kelsey Kerridge Sports Centre just over the
road from Parker’s Piece but there should be plenty of signs / people around to
point you in the direction on the day. Our stall number is KKE7 so whether
you’re a new or regular member, come say hi. We also have some handy
    posters
with our schedule for the year on them for you to take away.

We can also now announce that we’ll be holding our Freshers’ Squash on Saturday
13th October between 7-10pm in the
Bowett Room in Queens’ College where
we’ll be watching Voices of a Distant Star and When Marnie was There. The
squash is a great chance to meet other CUAMS members new and old and get a
taste of what CUAMS is like if it’s your first time joining us. There’ll also
be an anime themed raffle where you can win some anime DVDs and other goodies.

Finally, if you have not already seen, we’ve updated our schedule
page to include the schedule for Michaelmas term which includes the location
and time of every meeting as well as the episodes that we’re watching in each
meeting if you miss one and want to catch up. The full details can be found
over there but in general, most meetings (for both main and Sunday meetings)
will be in the Bowett Room in Queens’ College although we have to move to some
other rooms in Queens’ for some of the meetings. On Tuesday 23rd October, we’ll
be in the Bowett Room and on Sunday 28th October and Tuesday 6th November,
we’ll be in DD47. We’ll send out reminders closer to the time with more
information to make sure you don’t get lost.

We hope to see lots of you at the Freshers’ Fair and Squash and wish you all
    luck in the coming year.

  • New Things!

With the new year rapidly approaching we have many new things to announce! We
have both a fancy new website and a new schedule to let you know about.

As you can probably tell if you visited the website before, we’ve had a bit of
a clean up to help make the site look a bit prettier and modern: we hope you
    like it!

We are also pleased to announce our new schedule that can be found on the
meetings page. We’re still finalising the details on the exact
dates / locations of some of the meetings so check back soon for more
information closer to the start of term.

Finally, to any potential new members (or existing members who just want to
say hello), we’ll be at the CUSU Freshers’ Fair on Tuesday 2nd October and
Wednesday 3rd October so we hope to see you all there!

  • Freshers’ Squash 2017!

Thanks to everyone who came to see us at the Freshers’ Fair this year! Our Freshers’ Squash is coming up very soon: it will be held on 14th October, 7-10pm, in the Bowett Room, Queens’ College! If you’re unsure where to find us, we have a map to help you out!

We will be showing Death Billiards and the movie Kimi no Na wa (Your Name), so you can get a feel for what CUAMS meetings are like.

Attendance is free and open to all, and plenty of snacks will be provided! You can also buy CUAMS membership at the squash (£4/term, £10/year), which also enters you into our annual raffle with a chance to win all sorts of anime-themed prizes – don’t miss it!

We hope to see you there!

  • Sala Thong Social

We have an up-coming social at Sala Thong !

It is on Sunday 19th February 2017 at 6pm. You can make your way there independently, or simply head down after the Sunday meeting.

Sala Thong is on Queen’s road near Darwin, and serves beautiful Thai food. Hope to see you there!

  • Freshers’ Squash!

We have our Freshers’ Squash approaching imminently! It will be in the Bowett Room, Queen’s college at 7:00pm – 10:00pm, 15th October. (Here’s a handy Map )

This year we shall be showing Kizuna Ichigeki and the Cowboy Bebop movie.

Attendance at the squash is free, with bountiful snacks provided. You will also have the opportunity to join CUAMS during the squash. It costs £4 per term, or £10 for the whole year.

Joining CUAMS at the squash also enters you in our raffle, with chances of winning a variety of anime/manga related goodies!

  • Freshers’ Fair!

It’s a fresh new year of Cambridge life, which can only mean many distinct and/or interacting things. One such thing is the Freshers’ Fair!

Everyone, from life-long otaku to curious new folk, is welcome come see us in the Kelsey Kerridge Sports Hall (row 3, stall 14) on Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th October.

Stay tuned for news on our Freshers’ Squash and the first social of this academic year!

  • New Academic Year

A new academic year has started at Cambridge, and with it comes a new year of anime!

Freshers and old members alike, come see us at the Freshers’ Fair in the marquee on Parker’s Piece (row 14, stall 4) on Tuesday and Wednesday!

Our first meeting will be the traditional Freshers’ Squash on a not-so-traditional day, the Monday of 12 October, in the Bateman Auditorium in Gonville and Caius College.

Finally, we welcome our new Secretary, Vijay! Vijay is studying medicine, so he may be stuck with this job for a few years.

  • Tuesday Room Change

Once again, the meeting tomorrow, on Tuesday, 10 March, will be in the Auditorium Lounge, Robinson College. To get there, go through the main entrance and straight across the courtyard, enter the door in front of you and immediately turn left. On the college plan the Auditorium Lounge is marked 2, although the door is nearer to the digit 3.

  • Tuesday Room Change

Tomorrow’s meeting will be in the Auditorium Lounge, Robinson College. To get there, go through the main entrance and straight across the courtyard, enter the door in front of you and immediately turn left. On the college plan the Auditorium Lounge is marked 2, although the door is nearer to the digit 3.

We will also move into the Auditorium Lounge for the Tuesday meeting one month from now, on Tuesday, 10 February. We will remind everyone closer to that date.

  • Lent

It is now Lent term, and CUAMS is starting a new repertoire of anime! This is the perfect opportunity to join us if you couldn’t come last term. Only two shows are continuing, both of which are very episodic, so you can dive right in even if you haven’t seen them before. Students and non-students alike are welcome!

We have two independent sets of meetings: Main meetings (on Tuesdays this term) and Sunday meetings. Feel free to come to one or the other or both. See the meeting (to be updated) and schedule pages for more details on what we’re showing when. We always have snacks and drinks, and you’re free to discuss the anime (or anything else) in the breaks between episodes and after the meeting.

The first meeting this term is at 4:00 pm on Sunday, 18 January in Umney Lounge, Robinson College. To get there, go through the main entrance to Robinson (on the corner of Grange Road and Herschel Road, see map), immediately turn right and walk down the passage all the way down through two sets of glass doors. At this point you will see a sign saying Umney Theatre diagonally forward and left; the door next to the sign is the entrance to the Umney Lounge. There is also a college plan available.

In addition to anime, we’ll also be showing a Korean game show called The Genius as an optional bonus on Sundays. If you want to see it, come earlier for a start at 2:30 pm. This will be the third season of The Genius, but no knowledge of previous seasons is necessary.

The first Main meeting is at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, 20 January in Bowett Room, Queens’ College. To get there, follow the directions on this map. When you are inside the building circled on the map, go up the stairs on your right.

We’re looking forward to seeing you. Let’s have a good term together!

  • Thursday Cancelled, Sunday Room Change

Sadly, the meeting on Thursday, 27 November is cancelled due to a lack of room in which to hold the meeting. The next Thursday meeting will see the end of the current series, and there will be no bonus Thursday this term.

The meeting on Sunday, 30 November will still occur but in an unusual place: the Music Practice Room, Robinson College. As you enter the college, turn right and walk along the Long Court as you would to reach the Umney Lounge, but instead of entering through the doors next to the stairs at the end of the Long Court, go up the stairs. Go right across the High Court and through the doors at the very end.

  • New Academic Year

Thanks to everyone who visited us at the Societies’ Fair, and welcome to the new academic year!

Our first meeting is the freshers’ squash on Thursday, 16 October, from 7 pm to 10 pm, in the Bowett Room, Queens’ College. Come along (even if you weren’t at the fair or aren’t a student) to see some anime, get some snacks and drinks, sign up for membership and maybe even win a prize!

To get to the Bowett Room, follow the directions on this map. When you are inside the building circled on the map, go up the stairs on your right.

Most of our Thursday meetings this term will be in the same place. On Sundays, we will meet in Teaching Room 7 of Robinson College; see the Sunday meeting page for directions.

Old members, be careful! This year our main day of week is Thursday.

  • Room Change

As has been long shown on the the schedule page, today, on Tuesday, 17 June, we are in the Linnett Room, Robinson College.

  • Room Changes

On Tuesday, 13 May, we will be in the Umney Lounge, Robinson College.

On Sunday, 18 May, we will be in the Music Practice Room, Robinson College. As you enter the college, turn right and walk along the Long Court as you would to reach the Umney Lounge, but instead of entering through the doors next to the stairs at the end of the Long Court, go up the stairs. Go right across the High Court and through the doors at the very end.

  • AGM

Another year is behind us, marked by another AGM. Only one person stepped up to fill any of the open positions. Really? If you can do catering or master the Web, contact anyone who seems involved in the organisation of meetings!

On a brighter note, we thank Oli for his great job as Secretary for the last half year and welcome on board his successor: Max!

  • The Missing Room

On Sunday, 16 February, we will be in the Erasmus Room, Queens’ College.

  • More Room Changes

We were unable to book Queens’ this term. Nobody else stepped up to book a room in their college, and Robinson’s Auditorium Lounge has other events scheduled on some days, so we will be meeting in the Umney Lounge, Robinson College for all meetings, on both Tuesdays and Sundays.

There is one exception: no rooms were available on Sunday, 16 February. We have not yet found a substitute place for that meeting. If your college has an available room of suitable size (this being a Sunday, we will probably only have about a dozen people) that we can use, please get in touch with a committee member! For that matter, also get in touch if your college has a suitable room for Tuesdays.

  • Room Changes

The nearest two Tuesday meetings will take place in unusual rooms due to booking conflicts.

5 November is in the Erasmus Room, Queens’ College. To get there, go through the porters’ lodge, turn right, cross the river and then follow the directions you see on signs. The room is on the first floor. On the college plan it is marked 18.

12 November is in the Auditorium Lounge, Robinson College. Go through the main entrance and straight across the courtyard, enter the door in front of you and immediately turn left. On the college plan the Auditorium Lounge is marked 2, although the door is nearer to digit 3.

Sunday meetings, as well as further Tuesday meetings, will happen as usual.

  • First Regular Meetings

Regular meetings start next week. The first main meeting is in the Bowett Room of Queens’ College at 7 pm on 22 October, and the first Sunday meeting is in the Umney Lounge of Robinson College at 4 pm on 27 October. Hope to see you there!

Note that there is no Sunday meeting on the Sunday of 20 October.

  • Freshers’ Squash

The first meeting of the year is our freshers’ squash next Tuesday, on 15 October, from 7 pm to 10 pm. Everyone is welcome, and we’ll show two great anime films, Little Witch Academia and Paprika, as well as provide snacks and drinks. We will even have prizes up for grabs for those who sign up and pay their membership fees (£10/year or £4/term, which cover the snacks we have at every meeting!) during the night.

The squash will be held in the Bowett Room of Queens’ College, and to get there, you need to follow the directions on this map. When you are inside the building circled on the map, simply go up the stairs that you’ll have on your right. This is the place where we’ll have almost all of our Tuesday meetings this term. Our Sunday meetings are held in the Umney Lounge of Robinson College; see the Sunday meeting page for directions.

  • Societies’ Fair

Meet us at the Societies’ Fair this Tuesday and Wednesday! We’ll be at MF04 in the marquee on Parker’s Piece.

  • Secretary Change

Unfortunately, Florence, our Secretary, cannot rejoin us in the coming year. Her seat will not be vacant though, as Oli has stepped forward to replace her on the committee. Let’s thank Florence for the work she has done and welcome Oli on board!

  • Bonus Meetings

With exams looming upon us, CUAMS is switching to bonus meetings for the rest of the Easter term. We will be showing the same three new series on both Tuesdays and Sundays, but the series are carefully chosen so that each meeting is relatively independent of the others and can be easily missed.

If you haven’t been following us from the start of last term, now is a great time to join. As a reminder, we have meetings on Tuesdays from 7 pm to 10 pm in the Auditorium Lounge and on Sundays from 4 pm to 7 pm in the Umney Lounge, all in Robinson College. For directions, see the main/Sunday meeting pages or the news entries below.

  • Moving Back to Robinson

After moving main meetings from Robinson to the more central Queens’ for Lent, we are now forced to move them back for Easter as Queens’ has quiet periods covering almost the entire term. While farther from the town centre, Robinson has always been very kind to us, and once again it welcomes us in the Auditorium Lounge every Tuesday.

Please note also that the first Sunday meeting of Easter will take place not in the Umney Lounge as usual but rather in Teaching Room 7. To get there, enter the door just opposite the porters’ lodge and go all the way up the stairs.

  • AGM

Our AGM took place yesterday, but one could be forgiven for not noticing it: all committee positions other than President and Treasurer have been retained by their previous holders. Yes, you read that right: Xanth has finally succeeded in stepping down after eight years of benevolent reign. Our new Supreme Leader is former Treasurer Alex, while the Treasurer position is taken up by Eduard.

  • One Tuesday Meeting Moved

For the next Tuesday meeting only, namely the one on 12 February, we will move from the Bowett Room to the Erasmus Room at Queens’ College. To get there, go through the porters’ lodge, turn right, cross the river and then follow the directions you see on signs. The room is on the first floor.

  • Freshers’ Squash 2012

In the beginning of every academic year, CUAMS holds the Freshers’ Squash, where two movies are shown, membership fees are collected and anime discs are raffled off. This year is no exception, and the Freshers’ Squash will be held on Tuesday, 9 October, from 7 pm to 10 pm, when we will see Macross Frontier the Movie: The False Songstress and another movie.

For a lack of other options, the location is the Auditorium Lounge at Robinson College. Getting to the Auditorium Lounge from the main entrance is very simple: just keep walking forward in a straight line until you hit a glass door. When inside, you should hear and see us, but if not, you want the door on your far left. As ever, a college plan is available if you do not feel confident in these instructions.

  • All Meetings Moved

Due to :reasons:, all four of the remaining meetings are moved to the Umney Lounge at Robinson College. To get to the Umney Lounge, go through the main entrance to Robinson (on the corner of Grange Road and Herschel Road), immediately turn right and walk down the passage all the way down through two sets of glass doors. At this point you will see a sign saying Umney Theatre diagonally forward and left; the door next to the sign is the entrance to the Umney Lounge. There is also a college plan available if you prefer graphics to words.

    Meeting times are unchanged.

  • Main Meetings Moved

This is just a reminder that all further main meetings will be taking place in the R-Block Common Room in Sidney Sussex College. All times remain the same. The R-Block Common Room is where our Sunday meetings are held, and directions are available on the Sunday meeting page.

  • Golden Festival & CamCon

Right now the Cambridge Union Society is hosting the Golden Festival, five days devoted to Japanese culture. Free talks, saké tasting and a party are promised among other things. The festival dates are 2–6 May. While late news is late, email non-readers can easily solve this problem by using a phone microwave (name subject to change). Phone microwaves (name subject to change) sold separately.

Next week, on 12 May (from 10 am to 1 am—that’s right) at The Junction, takes place Cambridge’s own comic, anime, gaming, sci-fi and alternative fashion convention CamCon. Too many events are planned to list them here, but follow that link and you will land on the CamCon’s official website. Alternatively, feel free to contact Kai, who is involved with both events.

  • AGM

Yet another year has passed, and yet another AGM has taken place. Another absent attempt to seize presidential power failed to be prevented, while each of the other committee positions as ever had exactly one candidate running for it. With the evil RON soundly defeated by the vote, the glorious new committee consists of Xanth the President, Florence the Secretary, Alex the Treasurer, Lech the Catering Officer and Oleg the Webmaster. Kai is staying as Internal Officer for the time being; however, he is graduating this year, so we will need someone, preferably a member of King’s College, to replace him by Michaelmas.

While we were at it, we also approved some minor changes in the constitution of the society, mainly to bring theory up to date with practice.

  • Change of Times Next Term

Due to some events at King’s, two of our main meetings are going to have to move from Tuesday to Wednesday. Those meetings are 31/01 -> 01/02 and 28/02 -> 29/02. The meetings will still be from 7 – 10pm in the Chetwynd Room. We’ll be reminding everyone by email before the meeting.

  • Masa-kun Violin Recital

The Cambridge University Anglo-Japanese and Anime & Manga Societies are proud to present Masa-kun!

Masa-kun comes from London to give his debut performance in Cambridge. In demand by Japanese organisations and anime conventions alike, he’ll entertain with a variety of Japanese songs, ranging from Hikaru Utada to Final Fantasy tunes. His philosophy is to entertain with his music, breaking away from the notion of the violin as a “classical” instrument. Masa-kun’s performances can be seen on his YouTube channel. He will be accompanied by Hibiki Ichikawa, a professional shamisen player, who is also currently touring the UK.

AJS will be running a raffle during the intermission, with several bottles of umeshu up for grabs!

  • Michaelmas Series

The synopses for the series starting in Michaelmas are up on the Main and Sunday meetings pages. We’ll also shortly be announcing an exciting joint event with the CU Anglo-Japanese Society.

  • Societies’ Fair & Freshers’ Squash 2011

It’s almost the start of a new year, and CUAMS will once again be recruiting new members at the CUSU Societies’ Fair. You can come sign up to our mailing list on either Tuesday 4th or Wednesday 5th.

The Freshers’ Squash will be on Tuesday 11th in the Chetwynd Room, King’s College (directions can be found on the Main Meetings page), where we’ll be showing The Time of Eve and a surprise movie. You can sign up for a 1 year membership for £10, and everyone who signs up will be entered into a prize draw to win anime goodies! After a long (some would say traditional) run of good luck by old members, last year saw a significant amount of freshers win prizes too.

The year’s schedule is almost finalised and can be seen on the relevant page – synopsis pages will be up shortly~

  • Garden Party

The CUAMS Garden Party will be taking place on Friday 17th June, starting at noon on Queen’s backs, and eventually ending up in Dojo’s for a meal. Please bring along food and drink to share!

  • Bonus Meetings

From this Thursday onwards, main meetings and Sunday meetings are replaced by bonus meetings during the exam period. The schedule is Soredemo Machi Wa Mawatteiru, Kino’s Travels and GA ~Geijutsuka Art Design Class~. Timings are as always, and the episodes in these series are fairly standalone so feel free to come to any meetings you can attend.

  • Easter Term

Welcome back everyone to the last term of this Cambridge year. CUAMS, unlike most other societies, is still going strong with the programme. Main meetings are back on Thursdays, but will be taking place in the Munby Room (see the main meetings page for directions). Also please note that Sunday meetings are taking place from 3-6pm, and not 4-7pm. Series from last term will be continuing in their respective meetings, until June where both Thursdays and Sundays will become bonus meetings (see schedule for more details).

  • AGM

Once again in true CUAMS style, this year’s elections were a shining example of democracy. The ever-present threat of RON fazed none of the contenders, with Xanth continuing his presidency for his seventh year (prophecies foretell an eight year of his benevolent endless reign). Katherine, Tom and Lech have also retained their positions as, respectively, secretary, internal officer and catering officer. Alex was elected as the new treasurer, with Kai assuming the position of webmaster, and Tom (a different one) practically bullied into becoming an eventual catering officer for a short period of time. Thanks to the outgoing treasurer Yingke and webmaster James for their hard work over the last year!

  • Changes to the Schedule

Firstly, we apologise for the disruption to last week’s Thursday meeting. We have checked with King’s, and the very noisy group who was in Keynes Hall
last week will not be there again for the next couple of weeks, so meeetings will continue to be in the Chetwynd Room until further notice. If you
missed our move up to the Mumby Room, you’ll probably want to get caught up as soon as possible. To do so, get in contact with a
committee member or come on to IRC.

The other change to the schedule is that Sunday meetings will now be from 3pm to 6pm rather than the usual 4pm to 7pm. This is because someone
has booked the room from 6:30pm, and we want to give ourselves a bit of extra time to get packed up at the end so there isn’t quite such a rush. Hopefully
this doesn’t inconvenience anyone too much.

  • Lent Term

Welcome back to Cambridge; hopefully everyone’s well rested from the Christmas break. The first main change to CUAMS
this term is that main meetings are now on Fridays, not Thursdays. Unfortunately this is due to room-booking circumstances outside
of our control, and we apologise if it clashes with any other Friday commitments people might have. The first main meeting of term is on
Friday, 28th January, and remains in the Chetwynd Room. Sunday meetings start on Sunday, 23rd January, and are in every respect
the same as they were last term. More complete information can be found on the schedule page.

For anyone who wasn’t able to attend meetings last term, but is thinking about coming along this term, we’re watching several new
series, especially on Sundays, where we’ll be starting Kimi ni Todoke and Shiki. Now is therefore a great time to come along
and see if you like us, with no commitment to pay any membership fees until you’ve been to a few meetings. If you do feel like catching up
with any of the continuing series, you can get in contact with a member of the committee who will be able to
    sort you out.

One of the important events this term is the AGM, which happens in the fifth week, and the only really important bit of that is the committee
changeover. Xanth will still be around (although as always, he wouldn’t mind getting rid of the president position that has been his for about
eight years now), but our webmaster and treasurer are both graduating, and there’s a significant possibility that we’ll also lose our catering manager and
secretary, as well as most of the people who currently carry equipment to and from meetings. We would therefore be very grateful if anyone
interested in doing any of the committee positions or just helping out generally by carrying things would get in contact with Xanth, as it
is quite important for the society that we fill our committee positions.

  • Meetings

Hopefully everyone is enjoying the series that CUAMS has been showing, some of which will continue into next term. As we
near the end of the first term, there are a couple of changes to the norm worth noting. Firstly, this week’s main meeting is on
Friday, 26th November rather than the usual Thursday. Secondly, this week’s Sunday meeting is starting at 3pm rather than
the usual 4pm. We’ve also got some end-of-term bonus meetings coming up – more info on those nearer the time.

(As I imagine everyone noticed, the previous meeting was also on Friday, so this information should really have been up much sooner – sorry for
    forgetting to update.)

  • Sunday Meetings

If there’s anyone who can’t make it to our Thursday meetings, or for whom three hours of CUAMS per week just isn’t enough, we also have
Sunday meetings, the first of which is tomorrow (that’s Sunday, 24th October),
running from 4pm to 7pm. They take place in Sidney Sussex college, R-Block Common Room, which for old members is the same place as last year. The route there is a bit complicated, so for new members, we’ll have people waiting just inside the main entrance to Sidney Sussex to take you to the room where our meetings are held. Our room for Sunday meetings is smaller than the room for Thursday meetings, so if you’re only planning on coming to one meeting per week and it is otherwise an arbitrary decision, we recommend Thursdays.

This term on Sundays, we’re following Baka To Test To Shoukanjuu, The Tatami Galaxy and Ookiku Furikabutte. Note that at the first meeting, however,
we’ll be showing the first episode of Denpa Teki no Kanojo instead of Ookiku Furikabutte – this is to resolve scheduling issues with differences in the
numbers of episodes of the series we’re watching. Ookiku Furikabutte will instead be starting at the following Sunday meeting.

  • Weekly Meetings

Hopefully everyone enjoyed our squash (and especially the amazing Summer Wars). Our main meetings are on Thursdays, with the first one at 7pm on
    Thursday, 21st October
. Thursday meetings this term (and probably all through this year) will take place in the same place as the squash i.e.
    the Chetwynd Room, King’s College.

We’re following three series through this term – Working!!, Trapeze and Cross Game, and usually watching two episodes of each
per week, with breaks for drink and snack consumption. Some details are currently up on the
    Main Meetings
page, and synopses will be up there shortly (for now, you can follow the ANN links for brief synopses).

Members from last year, note that there is no Sunday meeting this week. Sunday meetings will start next week – full details will be in the e-mail
and on the next news post.

  • Squash

Thanks to everyone who visited our stall and signed up for the mailing list at the Freshers’ Fair. We can now confirm that our Squash will be held in the Chetwynd Room, King’s College, from 7pm to 10pm on Thusday, 14th October. The Chetwynd Room is where all our main meetings will be this term, and directions can be found at the top of our
    Main Meetings page
    .

At the squash, we will be showing two (excellent) standalone films. For everyone who joins CUAMS on the evening, we will also be holding a raffle with a
spectacular array of prizes courtesy of our friends at Beez. Membership is £4 for a term and £10 for the year, which pays for the food and drink we have at meetings. With the number
of anime DVDs and box sets we have to give away this year, there’s a good chance of making your money back straight away, so it’s well worth signing up.

Finally, note that the schedule is now up on the schedule page in near-complete form. It’s still
subject to minor change, but gives a pretty good picture of how we’ll be spending the year.

  • Freshers’ Fair 2010

Another new year begins at Cambridge. Welcome and welcome back to students new and old. As always, there are still a few finishing touches to be put
to the schedule (current members can view it in its near-completed state on the wiki). We have, however, been allocated a stall at the Freshers’ Fair.
The fair takes place at Kelsey Kerridge on the 5th October between 11am and 6:30pm and on the 6th October between 10am and 3pm. We’ll be at
stall D12 (a map of the stall locations can be found here) –
come along to ask any questions you might have, and to sign up to our mailing list.
